What is a birth doula?
A doula is a woman who is professionally trained in childbirth to provide emotional, physical, and educational support to help women have a positive birthing experience.
While doulas are a wealth of information and knowledgeable in many aspects of labor they do not provide any type of medical care. During labor, your doula is always close by to provide comfort with pain-relief techniques like breathing, relaxation, massage, and support for various laboring positions. The doula’s role is not to take the place of your husband or partner, but to complement and enhance the experience for you both. From an un-medicated birth to a cesarean, and everything in between, your doula will act as your advocate, helping you fulfill specific desires during times of vulnerability. |
Why choose to use a birth doula...
Women report (and studies have shown) higher rates of having a “positive birth experience” when a doula was present.
With the support of a doula there is:
• Reduced need for medical interventions
• Decreased cesarean rate
• Shorter length of labor
• Reduced requests for pain medications
• Reduced requests for an epidural
Sometimes, when birth doesn’t go as planned and medical interventions or a cesarean is needed, the situation leaves the mother feeling unprepared, disappointed, and alone. In this case, your doula will provide emotional, informational, and physical support
